About Ajit
Ayubowan (ah-you-bo-wahng)! My name is Ajit and I live on the “Island of Gems”. Dancing is a big part of our traditional culture. I am learning Pahatharata dancing and am a savran, or pom pom, dancer. I dance and shake my savran with the beat of the drums. All of our dances are to the beat of drums, our national instrument. Masks are used in almost all of our rituals. When I get older and become a better dancer, I want to be a masked dancer. When I dance in some festivals, there are aliya, or elephants with elaborate costumes! I don’t get to dance close to the elephants now, but when I’m a masked dancer I will. Do you know where I live?
